OPC Spotlight: The Climate Science Alliance – South Coast

The Challenge: Using the right science

The Solution: The Climate Science Alliance – South Coast

How Did They Do It?

The Climate Science Alliance was formed in 2015 to bring together South Coast scientists and decision-makers to share scientific information for on-the-ground, ecosystem-based, climate resilience projects.

The Alliance was formed because valuable science information was not always reaching decision-makers and research was often not coordinated or integrated into existing large-scale conservation actions. To remedy this, the Alliance provides information and assistance from scientists to support, promote and connect climate adaptation with natural resource and local government planning and projects.

The Alliance’s Orange Team (one of 3 topic teams) works on science-focused partnerships, featuring the Dial-A-Scientist service. Alliance members are linked with an extensive list of local scientists, with research topics varying from whole-ecosystem processes to localized niches. Dial-A-Scientist was developed to support the co-production of science between researchers and managers while building a greater foundation of trust to over the long-term. The Alliance has also developed a prioritized list of 30 regional climate change research needs. Alliance partners are now using the list to collaborate on projects to produce the needed research.

Who Made This Happen?

The Climate Science Alliance is managed by a six-person staff led by Amber Pairis, veteran climate visionary. The Alliance includes over 50 partners from South Coast local governments, the private sector, conservation organizations, academic institutions and others.

How is it Funded?

Foundational support for the Alliance came from California Fish & Wildlife, the San Diego Climate Collaborative, Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation and California Landscape Conservation Cooperative.
