OPC Spotlight: San Francisco Climate & Health Profile

The Challenge:  Building public support

The Solution:  San Francisco Climate & Health Profile

How Did They Do It?

Combining in-house resources with a federal Center for Disease Control grant, San Francisco’s Dept of Public Health developed a very user-friendly “Climate & Health Profile.” The report links sea level rise and other local climate hazards with associated potential health impacts, highlighting populations and locations in the city especially vulnerable to these changing conditions.

By systematically using climate projections to prioritize the most critical health impacts and risk factors, the Profile reveals essential information needed to take adaptation actions to protect San Francisco residents. Although all residents will be affected by climate change, certain populations will be affected more than others. The Profile examines how San Franciscans are impacted by climate change often depends on his-or-her age, race, income, language, educational attainment, housing conditions, and pre-existing physical conditions such as diabetes and mobility disabilities.

Who Made This Happen?

The Department of Public Health at the City/County of San Francisco produced the report with support and assistance from a number of city departments.

How is it Funded?

Primary funding for the Climate & Health Profile was secured  from the Center for Disease Control as part of their Climate Ready States/Cities Initiative.
