Description

This article for California's 4th Climate Change Assessment uses the case of drinking water utility managers in California to understand uses of climate-change information in resource management. Using interviews, the authors analyze three social temporalities of climate change, which they define as "alternative constructions of the future built into socio-technical engagement with water and into collective orientations to climate change." They identify large groups of managers that do not fit into the dominant type of social temporality assumed by most scholars and climate adaptation policy practitioners, and contend that consideration of sociological dimensions of climate knowledge may neccessitate a revised approach to climate service programs or related assistance efforts.
