Description

This project is the first of numerous projects in the two San Mateo County watersheds, Bayfront Canal and the Atherton Channel, that are being implemented as part of a flood management plan that will bring resilience to the region. Flooding in the area is associated with climate change-driven sea-level rise and high tides coinciding with storm events which prevent the canals from draining into the San Francisco Bay. The project entails installation of two underground pipes that extend from the Bayfront Canal at the upstream side of the existing tide gates to a new outlet at the adjacent South Bay Salt Pond Restoration area. During a major flood event, when the tide is high and the tide gates are closed at Bayfront Canal, this will provide relief to the adjacent communities (including five (5) mobile home parks) from frequent and nuisance flooding. This project will also mitigate flooding along Marsh Road which is a major transportation corridor between the East Bay and the Peninsula.
