This report examines the effectiveness of defensible space as a key adaptation strategy for mitigating wildfire disasters in California. Prepared by LAO in response to legislative interest in defensible space as a means of protecting against wildfires, the report focuses primarily on how the State of California can support individual efforts in defensible space to build resilience. The first section of the reports provides background on the role defensible space plays in preventing wildfire disasters. The second section summarizes the State’s main programs for verifying and promoting defensible space, as well as new takeaways about local efforts based on surveys and interviews. The third section contains LAO's analyses and findings. The fourth section provides recommendations for promoting defensible space compliance. The final section discusses the main funding sources that the state could use to implement these recommendations, as well as other potential future state efforts to promote defensible space.
